The owners of Cerro Gordo, along with others, have formed the CERRO GORDO HISTORICAL SOCIETY (CGHS), which is a California Non-Profit Corporation. In 1998 the CGHS was granted 501 (c) (3) status by the Internal Revenue Service. As a "Public Benefit Corporation," the primary goal of the CGHS is the creation of an interpretive site mining museum to serve the community.
The CGHS work will help to enrich visitor's knowledge of the area and its people, in regards to the importance of Cerro Gordo to the development of Los Angeles, the Port of Los Angeles at San Pedro and Eastern California in general.
The society will act as a source for educational research into the history of the district's mineral industry including its mining, transportation, life styles and families who were engaged in these pursuits. It will encourage the writing of histories and research discoveries, to be submitted to the society, by independent third parties.
For Educational purposes, the museum will contain a variety of archives and artifacts, Ultimately including a small historical library housed within the facility. The museum will also include information on the Swansea and Beveridge Mining Districts, due to their close proximity as neighboring mining camps.
In addition to geological information, rock and mineral specimens found in the Cerro GordoMining District will be on display. Equipment and tools typical of those used in the district will be integrated into displays, vignettes and working models, exhibiting a variety of mining and mineral processing activities related to the old mining camp.
The society works with people, as advisors, who have unique knowledge of the subjects fitting the purposes of the society. These talented individuals have provided us with expertise in anthropology, archeology, biology, botany, construction trades, engineering, geology, history, law, mineralology, mining, museum sciences, natural resource management, photography, and physics. We welcome input from persons of any profession who might contribute to the advancement of the CGHS experience.
